THE METHOD

How the calculator works

Enter total views and subscribers gained for the exact same reporting period — pull both numbers from YouTube Studio under Analytics → Audience → the Subscribers report, or review subscriber sources to see which videos drive the view-to-subscribe funnel.

The result is a funnel efficiency measure: of everyone who watched, what share chose to subscribe? Matching periods matters because views and subscriptions accrue on different timelines; mixing a month of views with a week of gains distorts the rate.

CONVERSION FORMULASubscribers gained ÷ Views × 100

What moves this metric

  • Video intent — tutorials and series convert differently than one-off entertainment
  • Traffic source mix — search, browse, suggested, and Shorts behave differently
  • Audience familiarity — first-time viewers subscribe less than returning ones
  • Calls to action — when and how you ask shapes the subscribe decision
  • Video length and watch depth — longer engagement can precede subscribing
COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical view-to-subscriber conversion rate?+

There is no official benchmark from YouTube, and averages vary widely by niche, video intent, and video length. Instead of chasing a universal number, record your own baseline and track the trend over time — a rising rate on comparable videos is what matters.

Why did my conversion rate drop?+

Common causes include a traffic source mix change (browse and suggested traffic converts differently than search), more passive views from Shorts or non-subscriber audiences, and content type shifts such as entertainment-only videos without a clear reason to subscribe.

How do I use the views-required projection?+

Enter a subscriber goal and the calculator divides it by your current subscribers-gained figure, then scales that by your current views. The result estimates how many views at your present conversion efficiency it would take to reach the goal.

Where do I find subscribers gained in YouTube Studio?+

Open YouTube Studio, go to Analytics, then the Audience tab, and look at the Subscribers report. You can also review subscriber sources to see which videos and surfaces drive subscriptions in your view-to-subscribe funnel.
