THE METHOD

How the calculator works

Average view duration (AVD) and average percentage viewed (APV) describe the same behavior from two angles. AVD is absolute time — viewers watched 4 minutes on average. APV is relative — those 4 minutes are 40% of a 10-minute video but only 13% of a 30-minute one. Comparing APV keeps videos of different lengths comparable.

Find both in YouTube Studio under Analytics → Engagement: average view duration is listed per video, and the audience retention graph shows the percentage of viewers remaining at every second. This calculator converts your inputs into APV, the time viewers skip on average, total watch hours, and the AVD required to hit a target percentage.

What moves retention

  • Intro strength and how fast the video delivers on its promise
  • Pacing, segment structure, and editing rhythm
  • Chapters that help viewers navigate long videos
  • Video length versus topic depth — padding costs percentage points
COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What is average percentage viewed?+

Average percentage viewed is the share of a video the typical viewer watches, calculated as average view duration divided by video length. A 4-minute average view duration on a 10-minute video equals 40% average percentage viewed. It expresses retention relative to length, so it is the fairer way to compare videos of different durations.

Why did retention drop after the intro?+

Long intros, slow hooks, and delayed payoffs are common drop-off points because viewers decide quickly whether a video delivers on its promise. Check the audience retention graph in YouTube Studio to find exact timestamps where viewers leave, then tighten or remove the segments before those dips.

Does retention affect YouTube recommendations?+

Retention is widely reported as one of several engagement signals YouTube can use when deciding what to recommend, alongside click-through rate, watch time, and survey feedback. YouTube does not publish exact weights or guarantees, so treat strong retention as a healthy signal to optimize rather than a promise of more views.

Where do I find these metrics in YouTube Studio?+

Open YouTube Studio, go to Analytics, and select the Engagement tab. Average view duration appears there for each video, and the Audience Retention graph shows the percentage of viewers watching at every moment. Use numbers from the same video and date range in this calculator.
